Thigh Thrust Test

The Thigh Thrust Test is used to detect the presence of sacroiliac joint involvement.  With the patient in the supine position, grasp the patient’s knee and ankle and flex the hip to 90 degrees while keeping the knee in flexion. Place one hand under the sacrum and with the other arm embracing the knee, apply a downward load through the femur in order to create a shearing stress in the sacroiliac joint.  This test is considered positive if it produces pain in the posterior pelvis indicating sacroiliac joint involvement.
